Courtyards at Southpoint
May 2026 Social Committee Report
Productive April, Busy May, and Summer's Coming!
By Jan McCallum, Co-chair
Happy May Day! And Rabbit, Rabbit, of course.
As you might expect, April was another busy month at Courtyards at Southpoint, and May will be more of the same. If you enjoy the events planned and hosted by the Social Committee, please consider joining us! We are a fairly small group — only seven of us — and we are always looking for fresh new ideas, more helpers and people who can be here when others are off gallivanting. We’d love to have you join the fun!
We enjoyed an especially busy several days during the second week of April, starting off with a fabulous Speaker Series presentation by Courtyards resident Peter Vedder. Happy Hour the next day was well attended and loads of fun, and our first-ever Spring Spruce Up was held that Saturday. Thanks to all who showed up with trowels, spades, clippers, gloves, pickaxes and more to do some much-needed tending in some of our common areas. Our Garden Club members were a big help in directing the volunteers, and it’s easy to see the results. Following the outdoor work, we enjoyed a huge potluck luncheon at the clubhouse. Thanks to all who prepared the delicious and plentiful food! Also, Molly and Kevin Devaney collected and delivered hazardous waste items to be disposed of properly, which was a great service to those who needed it.
Thanks to new interest group leaders who acted quickly to get their groups up and running! These new clubs started in April or May:
-
Bible Study, led by Rita Musante
-
Photography, led by Randy Pafford
-
ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out), led by Gerard Musante and Art Chambers
-
Veterans, led by John Robinson
-
Chess, led by John Robinson
Thanks also to Mary Vedder and Rita Musante for hosting our first Trivia Night as a subset of Games Night in April. If you are interested in one (or more) of these groups but did not receive information about it, please contact the lead person and/or join the associated Slack interest group.
Be on the lookout as other new group leaders contact those on their lists! And remember it’s never too late to volunteer to lead a group that’s currently leaderless.
Neighborhood-wide social committee activities this month will be:
-
Happy Hour — Friday, May 8, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
-
Speaker Series —Wednesday, May 27, 7 to 8 p.m., featuring Marv Knox on immigration
-

Two other events are worth noting, even though they are not hosted by the Social Committee:

-
The opening day of our pools, Saturday, May 9, at the clubhouse pool; will include potluck lunch; see Slack for details
Coming in June: Mark your calendars for our second Juneteenth Potluck Dinner, Friday, June 19.
