April 2026 Social Committee Report

The Results are In! Survey Says...

By Jan McCallum, Co-chair

Thanks to the 106 Courtyards at Southpoint residents who completed the Social Committee survey! That’s a little over a third of our residents, but it was enough to see plenty of interest and some definite trends.

If you indicated interest in a currently active group/club/activity, your name has been forwarded to the appropriate group leader. The next step on your part is to add yourself to the associated Slack group — if you haven’t already done that — and then simply start showing up! If you missed the survey but would like to join one of our groups, you may do the same thing. You may want to alert the group leader of your interest as well.

Regarding newly proposed groups, if someone volunteered to lead the group, names of all interested residents have been sent to that leader. Next steps for these groups will involve the leader working with the Social Committee to come up with a time and place for an initial meeting. Once potential members are notified and that first meeting takes place, the group will go forward from there.

A good number of proposed groups included people interested in becoming members, but no one stepped up to lead them. In that case, all interested parties received an email alerting them to others in the neighborhood who share the same interest. If anyone would like to volunteer to lead one of these groups, simply let the Social Committee know, and we will help you organize the first meeting.

Here are the groups that do not have leaders, with number of interested people in parentheses: bunco (21), bird watching (15), chess (3), jigsaw puzzles (12), Neighborhood Watch (21), trivia night (21), woodworking (7), men’s golf (5), ATT bike rides (15), pilates (27), self defense (16), tai chi walking (38), yoga (12), breakfast out (30), dinner out (34), small neighborhood dining groups (39).

Several people offered suggestions for groups or activities we didn’t include in the survey. If you’re also interested, please let us know. Here are those ideas:

  • Cooking classes/workshops

  • Classes on whole-food plant-based cooking.

  • Fly fishing; would like to learn how

  • Men's potluck

  • Music at the pavilion

  • Music: blues appreciation club involving presentations on local blues men and women and their histories, and visits to old blues hangouts, plus performances in the clubhouse, which would require a fee

  • An interest group devoted to fans of early music, meaning renaissance and baroque music with possibilities of bringing in performances and performers to talk about and play their music

  • Outdoor activities like corn hole

  • Progressive dinners for each street

In other news, March was a busy month here, as usual! Communitywide activities included Pi Day Pie potluck, an informative speaker series about Gandhi (thanks, Dick Fox!), and a delicious food truck, Dorothy's Old Fashioned Food Truck.

Coming this month will be:

  • Thursday, April 9, 7 p.m. — Speaker Series, featuring our own Peter Vedder

  • Friday, April 10, 5:30-7 p.m. — Happy Hour

  • Saturday, April 11, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. — Spring Spruce Up Day and potluck lunch. Rain date is Sunday, April 12. Watch your email for more information about this event.

  • Thursday, April 23, 5- 7 p.m. — Food Truck, DeeVine Dogs
