May 2025 Social Committee Report

As Spring Turns to Summer, Neighborhood Stays Active

By Linda Goelz and Mieke Jobsis, co-chairs

The Travel Club, along with the Social Committee, organized an April outing to Bennett Place in Durham, where a surrender of Civil War forces took place. The group then enjoyed a tasty lunch at Picnic.  Click here for pictures.

Philip Geiger from Edward Jones made an interesting presentation about fraud and scams in the clubhouse April 21. Click here to read the article about the Speaker Series event.

The Whiskey Club, spearheaded by Tom Rank, met in April to discuss the format of upcoming meetings. The club made several agreements:

  • Keep the Whiskey Club and the Craft Cocktails Club as separate groups. Many neighbors attend and enjoy both events, but some prefer their whiskey straight and would prefer to imbibe in high-end whiskeys, whose flavors can be lost in a mixed drink.

  • Change the meeting date to the first Thursday of the month, starting in September. The club will take a hiatus until then.

  • Keep the start time at 7 p.m.

  • Reduce the purchase to two bottles per session. This will minimize overage and allow a focus on a special high-end bottle, plus a mid/lower-shelf one.

  • Keep the fee to attend at $20 per person.

  • The usual meeting place will be the clubhouse. People may elect to open their homes as an alternative. The club will alert members when there is a change in venue.

Summer events include:

  • May 9, 5:30-7 p.m. Happy Hour. Join your neighbors in the clubhouse for some end of the week camaraderie. Bring your own tasty beverage. Light snacks provided.

  • May 10, Sunrise–Sunset Pool Opening. A private event coincides with the first day our pool opens. The clubhouse is closed during private events, except for the bathrooms, offices and fitness area. Conversely, when renting the clubhouse during the pool season, private-event guests are not permitted on the pool deck or in the pool.

  • May 12, 7-8 p.m. Speaker Series, “Basics of Photography.” Charles Gledhill will talk about taking photographs, from composition, to lighting, editing, etc.  Join us in the clubhouse for this informative talk to be followed by light refreshments.

  •  May 17, 9:30-10:30 a.m., Ladies Gathering.  Bring your morning beverage and start your Saturday with a friendly chat and fellowship at the clubhouse. The meeting may take place outside, weather permitting.

  • May 22, 5-7 p.m., food truck. Burger Bistro will be in the clubhouse parking lot. Pick up dinner and join your neighbors in the clubhouse or take your food home.

  • June 12, Durham Bulls game outing. Baseball anyone?

  • June 19, time TBD, Pot luck, featuring soul food in the clubhouse.  Calling all cooks and eaters!  We will celebrate Juneteenth with a potluck featuring soul food. More details forthcoming.
