June 2025 Social Committee Report

Summertime and the Living is Easy…

With Fun Activities to Boot!

By Linda Goelz & Mieke Jöbsis, co-chairs

Thank you to Social Committee member Sheryl Knauss for recruiting our May Speaker Series presenter, Charles Gledhill. Charles gave a presentation on photography and shared some fabulous tips and photos, including a beautiful action picture of Sheryl’s dog, Daisy. To read about the talk, click here.

Kudos to Barbara Taylor and all who joined her this past month to cut and tie more than 2,000 produce bags for gleaning with the St. Andrews Society. If you have other volunteer ideas for our community, please let us know. It takes a village.

¿Qué pasa? Mimi Augustin has kicked off “Learn Spanish!” — held every-other week on Mondays and Wednesdays; check the calendar for the exact dates and times. Mondays will focus on a specific lesson, and Wednesdays will be geared more toward conversation. All are welcome, regardless of experience or expertise in Spanish. If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, join the “#interest-spanish” Slack channel and reach out to Mimi for more information.

Grab your shoes! The Walking Club has been resurrected as Walk-n-Talk, thanks to some of our newer neighbors. The group meets every Tuesday and Thursday, with no RSVP necessary, at the corner of Fenwick and Middleground. Walks usually cover about two to three miles on the American Tobacco Trail, but they may vary as weather and preferences change. Join the “#interest-walk-and-talk” channel on Slack and/or check the calendar for specific times.

“The pool is open, when is water aerobics?” you might be asking. In previous years, our neighborhood world-traveler Karen Frankola led water aerobics twice a week during pool season. Many enjoyed the easy movement in the water and the laughter of “playing” in the pool. Aren’t we all children at heart? But, alas, we are without an instructor this summer. If you are interested in leading water aerobics, please let the Social Committee know. We’d be more than happy to add the sessions back to our summer calendar, and we know there is a following of pretty special neighbors who will be more than appreciative to have this activity back.

Call for Speaker Series volunteers: We hope you’ve enjoyed the variety of speakers we’ve had so far. The Social Committee is always looking for speakers and special talents that can be shared. We average about one speaker per month and look to you for suggestions or for stepping up to present something of interest.

Now that the Courtyards at Southpoint is at capacity and our homeowners association board is elected, the Social Committee has renewed its commitment to engage everyone in the ’hood! We know members of our community have many talents and a wealth of experience. Our neighbors are composed of veterans, bikers, hikers, gamers, golfers and sports enthusiasts from all walks of life. We hope our new neighbors will join the “old” ones in participating in and/or leading clubs, activities and special-interest groups.

We have about 20 clubs and activities that meet or take place regularly in our neighborhood. We’re always open to ideas to make our community more connected and/or suggestions for new clubs or interesting activities.

The Social Committee would love to hear from you at our general email address!

Summer events include:

  • June 7, 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Courtyard Crawl sponsored by the Garden Club. This is a most excellent opportunity to see new ideas on how to landscape your courtyard. We have so many talented gardeners. You’ll want to join in!

  • June 12, 6:30 p.m. Durham Bulls baseball game outing. We hope this will be a huge success and potentially repeated for future games. Thank you to Kevin and Molly Devaney for organizing!

  •  June 13, 5:30-7 p.m. Happy Hour. Join your neighbors in the clubhouse for some end-of-the-week camaraderie. Bring your own tasty beverage. Light snacks provided.

  •  June 16, 7-8:30 p.m. Speaker Series. Susan Brem will talk about USAID Soft Power. Susan, now retired, speaks from 45 years’ experience at USAID.  More details about this event will be made available via email and Slack. Join us in the clubhouse for this interesting and pertinent topic. Light refreshments will be served.

  • June 19, 6-8 p.m. Juneteenth Soul Food Potluck. Juneteenth, a federal holiday, commemorates the day the federal fleet sailed into Galveston Bay and enforced the Emancipation Proclamation. We will celebrate Juneteenth with a potluck featuring soul food. Bring your favorite dish to share.

  • June 26, 5-7 p.m. Food Truck — Friendly Tacos. Come to the clubhouse parking lot to pick up your dinner for home or enjoy it in the clubhouse/pool area. Our first food truck of the season was a huge success, serving close to 100 meals. With numbers like that, we should be able to entice the food trucks to keep coming!

  •  July 11, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Bingo and Potluck! Feeling lucky? Join us in the clubhouse, when we replace our usual Happy Hour with Bingo Night and a potluck. We will use the money raised for improvements to our community. More details to follow.

  • July date & time pending. Reaching Out to the Men: John Robinson in conjunction with the informal men’s lunch group proposes a Men’s Happy Hour/Meet and Greet event in July, exact date TBD. All men from Courtyards at Southpoint will be invited. At this BYOB event, we will recruit for participation on committees; explore organizing activities, such as sports outings, lunch or breakfast outings; brainstorm ideas for new clubs; and more fun stuff. Stay tuned for the date or reach out to John, a Social Committee member, to share ideas and interests.

  • July 24, 5-7 p.m.Food Truck Cilantro Mexican.Come to the clubhouse parking lot to pick up your dinner for home or enjoy it in the clubhouse/pool area.

Check out the calendar online on Slack or the artistically crafted calendar in the clubhouse to update yourself on all weekly happenings in our neighborhood. RSVP links for clubs are located at the bottom of each month on the online calendar. If your name is not on an RSVP sheet, please add it plus any other information on the sheet. Once you have the link to access any RSVP sheet, you have the power to update it. Also, remember to join the RSVP on the corresponding Slack channel to receive updates about your specific interest.
